HISTORY

Die Luitpold-Lichtspiele um 1929

Go on a voyage of discovery – Historical plaques tell the story of the Block

More than 200 years of the Luitpoldblock. Joseph von Utzschneider, second Mayor of Munich from 1818 to 1821, had it built in 1812, laying the cornerstone for a mix of businesses that nobody anticipated would be such a commercial success. With a floor plan that has hardly changed throughout its history, the “Utzschneider-Realitäten” was the first building beyond the city walls to shelter numerous shops – in addition to Fraunhofer's optical institute, the mechanical workshops of Liebherr und Werner as well as a tobacco factory, glass painting school and lithographic institute.
Now, thanks to numerous plaques placed around the block, you can actively experience its history. Embark on a voyage of discovery.

THE NEW ARCHITECTURE

Demmel und Hadler

The outstanding feature of the Cafe Luitpold when it opened back in 1888 was the range of rooms, each with a different atmosphere. However, despite all of their differences, they were clearly connected by the central axes. It was on this tradition that architects Gerhard Hadler and Bernhard Demmel wanted to build.

The intention was to mirror the architecture of the historical vestibule, while the placement of the columns creates niches which encourage people to spend some time relaxing in the café. The historical reference creates a very special atmosphere. The filigree projecting roof over the entrance, with its historically-styled signage, and the two-story facade make an open impression. The palms in the inner courtyard create a hint of the South, while the red chairs are an eye-catcher which echo the tradition of the Cafe Luitpold.
